Article 1: All humans are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
- means no one is born different from others - can't be born into slavery and kept in a cage.
- you have access to basic human rights - food, water, shelter
Relation to the story: Martha
- Born into a religious cult, has basic rights but no personal freedom.
- Treated like a slave by her parents.
Jim:
- Born & kept in a cage, not allowed outside.
- Has basic human rights.
- Lost rights to education, love, freedom, and socialization.
- No clothes
Evidence: Martha
- no friends because she is righteous, different from others

Why did the author include this?:
- Main Story Idea
- Made us feel Sorry
- Sympathy for Martha
Should Martha be forgiven?:
- Yes because even if she kept the secret about Jim held in the cage, she was also suffering as well.
Jimmy (Evidence):
- Kid in a basement, Martha to Scott.
Evidence (Quote in the story): A boy, Scott. He lives in the cellar in a cage. Pg. 146
- Jim doesn't get to see his mom.
Evidence (Quote in the story): And She let her kid live in a cage? ... She doesn't know!.. Pg 146
Why did the author include this?:
- Good story plot
- Builds tension and suspense.
- Feel sorry, and angry at her parents.
- Shows negative influence of bullying.
Abomination: Resolved - gets socialized, gets to see his mom again, clothes, freedom, privacy, love.
Trauma - Not gonna have a normal life.
