Tangata Whenua

Tangata Whenua
By Jaren

Today during hurumanu I watched a video about how the Maori people found Aotearoa and I'm going to tell the info there was from the video.

A man named Kupe was the first person who set foot on Aotearoa along with his wife while chasing an octopus.

Kupe named the island he set foot on Aotearoa after looking at the long white cloud at the top of it.

Maori people arrived in New Zealand from Hawaiki, although when they arrived in New Zealand they couldn't return back because of the strong wind that was with it.

Then on Maori brought dogs and rats. Long before Maori found Aotearoa they used canoes to travel to nearby islands such as the Philippines, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea.

Then, later on, they started to invent a new boat that can travel further than the canoe that was named Waka.

The Waka had two boats that are joined together with a sail so they wouldn't have to paddle anymore. During then the Maori were able to travel to further places such as America.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Kia Ora Jaren. You have recalled lots of good facts about the first people in Aotearoa. You show a great knowledge of how the Maori came to arrive in New Zealand and the challenges that they faced.
I look forward to reading more of your work as you learn more about the history of Aotearoa.
