Write that Essay Sentences


The 'W' Sentence - makes the sentence sound thoughtful & knowledgeable

Remember the rule: Not every 'W' word works as a sentence starter. Remember to put a comma when the parts affected by your 'W' is finished

Examples - who, while, whereas, when, where, what, whilst, with.

Example Sentence:

  1. Whilst the class was eating, I read my book.
  2. Where you like chocolate, others prefer candy.
  3. While you were playing, I was studying in my room.
  4. With my best friend, I was able to finish our homework in time.
  5. When we came back home, we started playing in the living room.
  6. While we waited, we decided to play rock paper scissors.
  7. Whoever did the prank last period, it was not funny.
  8. While I was doing work, my friend was playing games.
Task 1:
  1. Quickly, I finished my work before the bell rang.
  2. Suddenly, the whole room became quiet.
  3. Calmly, I volunteered to join the volleyball club.
  4. Mostly, I would sleep around 9pm.
Task 2:
  1. Behind the school, there was a public swimming pool.
  2. Under the table, there was water spilled on the floor.
  3. Between the two buildings of the mall, I saw two smokers lurking around.
  4. On the roof, I saw two pigeons flying around.
Task 3:
  1. Silently, the cat stalked its prey.
  2. In 1975, a high school was finally built in Hornby.
  3. Anxiously, I awaited my test results.
  4. Fortunately, the kai today was something good.
  5. About twenty years ago, a law was passed that changed everything.
  6. Often, the things we say and the things we mean are two different things.
  7. Cautiously, he knocked on the principal's door and awaited a reply.
The 'ing' sentence

Use the - ing of the verb e.g to run - running

Remember the rule - When you finish your - ing phrase, place a comma, then write the rest of the sentence.

Example - Writing, Saying, Watching, Running, Realising, emerging, Grasping, Speaking, Analysing, Signaling, Exposing, Gossiping.
  1. Realizing that the test was coming, she quickly studied in her room.
  2. Hearing the words from my coach, he started doing the exercise.
  3. Walking away from my teacher, I overheard the principal speaking in a low voice. 
  4. Pushing himself in the game, he was able to score 8-7 for his team.
  5. Walking away from the danger, I warned my friends about it.
  6. Engaging myself in sports, I slowly got better.
  7. Listening to my teacher, I quickly had more understanding.

The 'ed' sentence

Use the ed version of the verb e.g to jog - jogged. This makes for a punchy start to your sentence.

Remember the rule - When you finish your - ed phrase, place a comma, then write the rest of the sentence.

Some example words - frustrated, surprised, excited, committed, undaunted, determined, overpowered, concerned, cornered, delighted, enthralled.  

Example Sentences:
Excited for the trip, I quickly prepared my stuff.
Scared for what my exam results would be tomorrow, I tried my best to avoid school tomorrow.
Delighted by the food, I bought another bowl.
Surprised by my friend's test results, I congratulated him.
Determined to pass the exams, I quickly studied in the library.
Committed to the work, I kept on going until 10 pm.
Frustrated by my friend, I walked backed into the cafeteria.
