Write that Essay Sentences
The 'W' Sentence - makes the sentence sound thoughtful & knowledgeable
Remember the rule: Not every 'W' word works as a sentence starter. Remember to put a comma when the parts affected by your 'W' is finished
Examples - who, while, whereas, when, where, what, whilst, with.
Example Sentence:
- Whilst the class was eating, I read my book.
- Where you like chocolate, others prefer candy.
- While you were playing, I was studying in my room.
- With my best friend, I was able to finish our homework in time.
- When we came back home, we started playing in the living room.
- While we waited, we decided to play rock paper scissors.
- Whoever did the prank last period, it was not funny.
- While I was doing work, my friend was playing games.
Task 1:
- Quickly, I finished my work before the bell rang.
- Suddenly, the whole room became quiet.
- Calmly, I volunteered to join the volleyball club.
- Mostly, I would sleep around 9pm.
Task 2:
- Behind the school, there was a public swimming pool.
- Under the table, there was water spilled on the floor.
- Between the two buildings of the mall, I saw two smokers lurking around.
- On the roof, I saw two pigeons flying around.
Task 3:
- Silently, the cat stalked its prey.
- In 1975, a high school was finally built in Hornby.
- Anxiously, I awaited my test results.
- Fortunately, the kai today was something good.
- About twenty years ago, a law was passed that changed everything.
- Often, the things we say and the things we mean are two different things.
- Cautiously, he knocked on the principal's door and awaited a reply.
The 'ing' sentence
Use the - ing of the verb e.g to run - running
Remember the rule - When you finish your - ing phrase, place a comma, then write the rest of the sentence.
Example - Writing, Saying, Watching, Running, Realising, emerging, Grasping, Speaking, Analysing, Signaling, Exposing, Gossiping.
- Realizing that the test was coming, she quickly studied in her room.
- Hearing the words from my coach, he started doing the exercise.
- Walking away from my teacher, I overheard the principal speaking in a low voice.
- Pushing himself in the game, he was able to score 8-7 for his team.
- Walking away from the danger, I warned my friends about it.
- Engaging myself in sports, I slowly got better.
- Listening to my teacher, I quickly had more understanding.
The 'ed' sentence
Use the ed version of the verb e.g to jog - jogged. This makes for a punchy start to your sentence.
Remember the rule - When you finish your - ed phrase, place a comma, then write the rest of the sentence.
Some example words - frustrated, surprised, excited, committed, undaunted, determined, overpowered, concerned, cornered, delighted, enthralled.
Example Sentences:
Excited for the trip, I quickly prepared my stuff.
Scared for what my exam results would be tomorrow, I tried my best to avoid school tomorrow.
Delighted by the food, I bought another bowl.
Surprised by my friend's test results, I congratulated him.
Determined to pass the exams, I quickly studied in the library.
Committed to the work, I kept on going until 10 pm.
Frustrated by my friend, I walked backed into the cafeteria.
